Director
Don Carreras is Theatre Director, teaches Beginner, Intermediate, and Proficient Honors Technical Theatre classes, serves as Troupe Director for AFHS's International Thespian Society (ITS) troupe, and is Theatre Club advisor. He has a Master's degree in Music Education from Hofstra University and over 35 years of teaching experience. Alongside his music and teaching careers, Mr. Carreras has conducted, directed, and served as Technical Director for nearly 60 musicals and 30+ plays over the years.
Don’s first year in NC (2016) brought theatre accolades at Triangle Rising Stars where he and his students were awarded best Set Design and Lighting Design for their work on Tarzan, the Musical. In August of 2019 his students performed The Giver at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2023, AFHS’s production of Anastasia was nominated for best Set Design and Lighting Design at Triangle Rising Stars. Most recently, AFHS's 2024 production of The Addams Family was awarded Best Costumes at DPAC Rising Stars. The production was also nominated for Best Actress (Gabriella Martinez), Best Set Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Ensemble and Best Musical.
When Mr. Carreras is not teaching or spending time with his family, he enjoys performing, playing hockey and working on classic cars.
Classes - Technical Theatre
Students explore the various aspects of design and production for theatre. Areas of study may include scenery, lighting, sound, makeup, properties, costumes, and stage management.
Beginning Technical Theatre Arts Students will:

Identify and understand basic theatre and technical theatre terminology.

Recognize technical theatre fields and the careers available.

Display understanding of safety procedures in the theatre and the scene shop.
